August news
mentors: a steady presence in transition
As August comes to a close and the season begins to shift, we think especially of our youth who may be in a season of transition: whether that's going back to school, exploring college or career choices, adjusting to new schedules, or stepping into new environments.
Even when a change is positive, we know that any kind of transition can stir up feelings of uncertainty, anxiety, or loss — which makes us all the more grateful for mentors like you, who can be a consistent, steady presence when so much else may be changing.
last wnba outing!
Our last Chicago Sky outing for the year will be September 17 at 7:00pm.
We'd love to see you and your mentee there!
As a reminder, tickets are free and available on a first-come, first-served basis. All mentors and mentees, including alumni matches, are welcome to attend!
If you're interested in attending the game on Sept. 17, please let us know as soon as possible. Stay tuned for additional details.
mentor support group
Please join us for our virtual Mentor Process Support Group on August 25 at 6:00pm. This will be a space for mentors to share and connect with one another about their mentoring experiences, challenges, and successes. Whether you are an experienced mentor or onboarding to become one, we would love to have you join.
Our virtual Mentor Support Groups are held each month (typically the last Tuesday of every month) at 6:00pm.
Contact kende@safefamilies.net with any questions.
lunch and learn: substance use disorder
You're invited to join an upcoming Lunch and Learn on Wednesday, August 26, from 12-1pm.
This Lunch & Learn will be exploring Substance Use Disorder (SUD) and its impact on children, caregivers, and families. This informative session will provide a foundational understanding of SUD, including how it affects the brain, its impact on families, prevention and treatment options, available community resources, and the role Safe Families can play in supporting caregivers and children.
growing your relationship with your mentee
We know that the kind of relationship that truly makes a difference in a young person’s life doesn’t happen overnight. It is built slowly, through trust, consistency and genuine care over time.
The Developmental Relationships Framework is a great resource that walks through the key elements of building and sustaining meaningful relationships with young people including expressing care, challenging growth, providing support, sharing power, and expanding possibilities.
Whether you’re just getting started, or have been mentoring for a while, it’s a great tool to support the quiet, powerful work you’re already doing.

reflection
As summer is beginning to come to a close, take a moment to look back on these past few months with your mentee.
What stands out to you?
What strengths have you seen in them or in yourself?
What have you learned about each other, or moved through together?
We'd always love to hear from you if you'd like to share.
