“The truth is, rarely can a response make something better – what makes something better is connection."

- Brene Brown

word of encouragement

One of the most meaningful things we can offer our youth is our presence. Not a solution or the perfect words, just showing up consistently, and letting them know and believe they matter. And, this is exactly what you do. Connection is the thing that can change everything, and you are building it one visit at a time.

Thank you for the care and commitment you bring - we are grateful for you!

foster care q & A

This month's Mentor Support Group: Foster Care Q & A is dedicated to answering your questions about the foster care system!
Two professionals who work closely within the foster care system will be joining us to shed light on what life in the system actually looks like for the youth you’re mentoring. There will be a short presentation and a time for open Q&A and discussion. We hope you can join us for this session on Tuesday, October 27 at 6pm.

All attendees present will receive a Dunkin gift card for joining this valuable session!

Whether you are an experienced mentor or onboarding to become one, we would love to have you join. An email invitation has been sent - if you did not receive the invitation or if you have any questions, please reach out to kende@safefamilies.net.

how to be an askable adult training

If you missed the opportunity to attend MENTOR's How to be an Askable Adult training on October 1st, you can watch the recording here!

A survey showed that youth are longing for supportive adults in their life - adults who are “askable.” This training focuses on how you can be a safe, askable adult for your mentee. The training highlights youth voices and experiences, identifies qualities of askable adults, explores skill-building tools for better relationships, and provides practices to increase communication and listening skills with youth.

reflection question

Think about a moment with your mentee recently, big or small, that stayed with you. What did it tell you about them? About yourself?

activity idea

If you’re looking for something simple but meaningful to do this month, try this: ask your mentee to show you their favorite song right now and listen to it together. Then share yours. See what comes up.
